It is a well known fact that Domestic Violence is a cycle that begins in childhood. Domestic violence is often passed down through generations of families, but can impact all of us through our relationships with other people. Megan has presented her program “Expect Respect” to thousands of individuals at high schools, middle schools and at civic organizations throughout Kansas, Texas and Wisconsin. A trained volunteer at Harbor House, Megan helped raise over $6,000 for this organization. Through volunteer efforts with Delta, Delta, Delta, over the past two years, she has raised nearly $10,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
BIO: Megan’s first became interested in pageantry at age 18 when a family friend recruited her to compete in the Miss Chisholm Trail local pageant. Completely green to pageantry, Megan placed as 1st Runner Up and her interest was piqued! That summer she watched from the audience as Kim Grice, a fellow Wichita State University classmate, was crowned Miss Kansas 2001. It was that moment when she decided she wanted to compete at Miss Kansas. Thus began a long journey – Megan placed as 1st or 2nd Runner Up in 9 pageants over 2 ½ years before she was crowned Miss Sunflower 2003 and had her first opportunity to compete at Miss Kansas 2003.
At age 21, Megan graduated magna cum laude from Wichita State University where she earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Music Business and Entrepreneurship. Two weeks after graduation, Megan’s hard work and dedication were rewarded! Competing under the title of Miss Wheat Capital, she was selected as Miss Kansas 2004! That year she was also the recipient of the Preliminary Talent & Swimsuit, State Scholar, Tara Dawn Holland Community Service, and Miss America Community Service Awards. Megan spent her year as Miss Kansas championing the cause of domestic violence prevention with her platform “Breaking the Silence”.
Megan had many incredible experiences throughout her year as Miss Kansas. In addition to the serving as spokesperson for the state of Kansas and the Kansas Children’s Service League, Megan was also spokesperson for the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV). During her year of service, Megan shared her message for awareness and prevention with 68,000 people across the country, lobbied Congress in Washington D.C., recorded several PSAs, hosted a state-wide legislative day, designed a children’s coloring book, and regularly appeared on radio and television to promote domestic violence awareness. Dedicated to helping women and children, Megan’s fund raising efforts were recognized nationally by the Miss America Organization and a Presidential Service Award. Megan helped raise more than $500,000 for prevention services. Today she continues to advocate for women and children as a board member for the KCSDV.
In September 2004, Megan competed in the Miss America 2005 pageant broadcast live on ABC from Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was thrilled to place as a Top Ten finalist in front of 9.8 million people and represent Kansas in the pageant’s last year on network television in Atlantic City. Additionally she was honored to be a Quality of Life finalist for her work in domestic violence prevention.
With the $25,000 in scholarship money she earned from competing in the Miss Kansas and Miss America programs, Megan decided to pursue her Master’s Degree. Shortly after crowning Miss Kansas 2005, Megan moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend Pepperdine University. In April 2007 she earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA.
Thanks in large part to the skills developed and experience gained as Miss Kansas, Megan now works full-time as an advocate, singer, spokesperson, and pageant coach.
